Former NBA All-Star Anthony Mason is in a New York hospital after suffering a heart attack earlier this week, his agent confirmed to the New York Times.

Longtime NBA reporter Peter Vecsey broke the news Wednesday, reporting that Mason was fighting for his life after a heart attack due to congestive heart failure.

Don Cronson, Mason's former agent, was more optimistic about Mason's condition.

"Right now, it’s day to day, but that’s an improvement from moment to moment," he told The Times on Thursday.

The New York Knicks tweeted out support for Mason and his family on Wednesday:

On Friday, Cronson told Ian Begley of ESPN New York that Mason's condition is improving.

"He isn't out of the woods, but he's had two good nights. It seems like he's day to day now. Before it was hour to hour," Cronson said.

Mason, 48, spent five of his 13 NBA seasons with the Knicks. The 48-year-old, drafted 53rd overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1988, also played for the New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets, Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks.

Mason, who posted career averages of 10.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists on 50 percent shooting, made an All-Star appearance in his lone season with the Heat in 2000-01.
