Kings protesting controversial loss to Grizzlies

The Sacramento Kings won't let their controversial, last-second loss to the Memphis Grizzlies go.

The Kings lost the heartbreaker in Memphis on Thursday, when Grizzlies guard Courtney Lee caught and converted the game-winning alley-oop layup despite the team only having 0.3 seconds to work with.

The Kings' protest, according to USA TODAY's Sam Amick, is based on the fact that Lee did not get the shot off in time and that Kings big man Ryan Hollins tipped the ball first, which should have started the game clock.

Lee definitely released the ball before time expired, but the issue seems to be that the clock didn't begin immediately as he caught it, as it should have.

If Hollins did touch it, of course, when Lee released the ball wouldn't have mattered, as time would've expired before Lee even caught it.

It seems unlikely that the league will reverse the result of a game, but other than a $10,000 fee to protest it, there's no harm in trying.

In the rare event the Kings prevail, they would be refunded the $10,000.
