Jose Calderon will miss Knicks' opener Wednesday with calf strain

The New York Knicks will open their 2014-15 season missing one of their key offseason additions.

Shortly before game time, the Knicks announced that point guard Jose Calderon will sit out Wednesday due to a strained right calf. Shane Larkin will draw in as the starter in his place.

What could be a shaky start to the Knicks season now looks even more daunting. The team is admittedly still learning Derek Fisher's triangle-based offense, and losing its point guard and best passer is a major blow. It doesn't help matters that the Knicks are facing the Chicago Bulls, perhaps the league's best defensive unit.

Larkin is solid but struggled in the preseason, averaging just 4.3 points and 1.6 assists in 21.2 minutes while shooting just 42.9 percent from the floor. Calderon, too, was still feeling out his third new offense in as many years, but the experienced veteran is about as reliable as they come when the game starts (at least on offense).
