Cavs' Varejao to start home opener, Thompson will come off the bench

In a not-so-surprising turn of events, the veteran player won the head coach's trust over a blossoming youngster.

Cavaliers head coach spoke to members of the media on Friday, and named Anderson Varejao as the team's starting center, thus relegating Tristan Thompson to the bench.

At the start of training camp, Blatt was undecided between the two, but Varejao's consistency and defense in the paint eventually won out over Thompson.

In all likelihood, Thompson and Varejao will split duties at center. Varejao is the better player at this time, but he's also injury prone, whereas Thompson has proven to be quite durable over his first three seasons in the NBA.

Their respective stats from last season are listed below.

2013-14 Stats Thompson Varejao
GP 82 65
MPG 31.6 27.7
PPG 11.7 8.4
RPG 9.2 9.7
BPG 0.4 0.6
