Celtics, agent trying to find new home for Will Bynum

Will Bynum isn't long for the Boston Celtics roster.

There's little chance Bynum, acquired last week from the Detroit Pistons for Joel Anthony in a deal motivated entirely by financial reasons, ever suits up for the Celtics. Even though he's ready to play after suffering a hamstring strain earlier in the preseason, Bynum isn't in the team's plans, and should be off the roster shortly.

"We're trying to see if there is something we can do," Bynum's agent Mark Bartelstein told the Boston Herald. "It's a tough time of year to make a trade."

The hope on the part of both player and team is they can find a landing spot for Bynum via trade, allowing the Celtics to receive something, even just a trade exception, in return, and assuring Bynum a roster spot.

Boston has too many guaranteed contracts on their books ahead of the regular season, and Bynum doesn't fill an immediate need or represent a long-term upgrade over another roster player. Even in waiving his $2.9-million contract - a certainty by the season opener if he cant be moved - the Celtics stand to save $900,000 from the trade.

Bynum spent the past six seasons with the Pistons, averaging 8.4 points and 3.3 assists in a reserve role. It seems a longshot any team would want to add the 31-year-old at his guaranteed salary, and the expense of a roster spot, when he may be available at the league minimum later on.
