Report: Stephenson had verbally committed to join Mavericks before deal fell through

The Dallas Mavericks very nearly landed shooting guard Lance Stephenson instead of forward Chandler Parsons this offseason.

As Stephenson's agent Alberto Ebanks told Jared Zwerling of Bleacher Report, Stephenson and the Mavericks verbally agreed to a two-year deal this summer.

However, the Mavericks' ability to ink Stephenson was contingent on Houston's decision with Chandler Parsons, who signed an offer sheet from Dallas. The Rockets had the option to match, but they decided against it, allowing Parsons to move to Dallas.

With Parsons in town, the Mavericks no longer had the cap space necessary to sign Stephenson, who eventually found his way to Charlotte on a three-year deal.
