Danny Granger reveals he had offseason knee surgery

Steve Mitchell / USA Today Sports

While there was plenty of excitement for Miami Heat media day on Friday, the day did bring with it a small piece of disconcerting news.

According to the player himself, Danny Granger had offseason knee surgery two months ago, though he expects to be fully ready for the team's regular season opener on Oct. 29. While routine offseason maintenance is, of course, ordinary in the NBA, Granger having an unspecified knee procedure could worry Heat fans, bringing to mind that Granger has played just 46 games over the past two seasons.

Then again, the Heat wouldn't have signed Granger without medical evaluations they were comfortable with, so this was probably a minor matter. While Granger doesn't expect to sit out the second night of back-to-backs, he did say his maintenance program will be similar to that of Dwyane Wade's.

It will be interesting to see how Granger looks when the season gets underway, given how his role could expand well beyond what he provided the Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Clippers last season, when he was good defensively and from long range but not particularly effective overall.

Expecting peak Granny Danger - he averaged 21.6 points from 2008 to 2012 - would be foolish, but Miami is surely hoping he can expand on last season's 8.2 points and 20.7 minutes.
