John Wall credits Sam Cassell for helping his development

Sam Cassell has taken his coaching talents from Washington to L.A. to join Doc Rivers' Clippers staff, but John Wall won't soon forget how Cassell helped his young career.

"He was a big part of it," Wall told CSNWashington.com of Cassell. "Definitely helped me with my jump shot. Just being a mentor, somebody who was a point guard who knew the game very well. It was big."

Wall, who shot just 24 percent from behind the arc over his first three seasons, upped his three-point proficiency to 35 percent in 2013-14 and has become a better shooter overall.

As an all-around player, the 23-year-old enjoyed a career-year last season which coincided with the Wizards making the playoffs for the first time in six years, including the first time in Wall or Cassell's Wizards tenure.

Wall was selected to his first career Eastern Conference All-Star team in the process.

Cassell spent five seasons as a Wizards assistant, starting in 2009 under Flip Saunders and most recently under Randy Wittman, after 15 seasons as a player with the Rockets, Suns, Mavericks, Nets, Bucks, Timberwolves, Clippers and Celtics.

"I was happy for him," Wall said of Cassell's new job with the Clippers. "His goal is to become a head coach one day. I think he thought it would come a little quicker being a coach with the Clippers. I wish him the best of luck."
