Adam Silver says NBA is considering idea of soccer-style midseason tournament

Could an NBA Cup of sorts be on the league's horizon?

Well, according to commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA is considering the idea of a midseason tournament similar to what takes place in European soccer leagues.

Speaking with reporters at the Las Vegas Summer League on Tuesday, Silver gave a vague explanation of the suggestion, indicating that it would essentially provide teams with a chance of winning a trophy outside of the NBA Finals. No specifics were given regarding the format, but Silver probably has a knockout-style tournament in mind in which all 30 NBA franchises would compete.

In England, for example, the FA Cup sees clubs in the country's top 10 divisions get paired up, with the winner of each matchup advancing to the next round, where they get paired up with a new team. However, the FA Cup is usually spaced out across the course of nine months, whereas Silver seems to have a tournament in mind that would take place all at once in a week or two.

Those who enjoy Adam Silver's progressive mentality will likely applaud the idea, while those who believe the NBA's schedule is already far too congested will undoubtedly be quick to voice their displeasure. But whatever side of the fence you fall on, just remember that this is nothing more than an idea at the moment with plenty of details still needing to be sorted out.
