Monroe was officially extended a qualifying offer by the Pistons on Monday, the Oakland Press reports.

Analysis:

The move is a formality at this point, as the Pistons now retain the right to match any offer Monroe receives as a restricted free agent this summer. While he's considered one of the better free agents on the market, it's highly unlikely a team throws max or near-max deal at him, so a return to Detroit is certainly possible. Monroe averaged 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds in 82 starts last season.
