The Phoenix Suns selected Syracuse guard Tyler Ennis with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

It took until the No. 18 pick, but the most steady point guard in the draft is off the board. Lacking in sizzle and flash compared to Dante Exum or Elfrid Payton, Ennis is perhaps the safest one in the class, someone who should have no trouble running an NBA offense effectively and precisely. He can pass, he has great vision, he can slash, and his jump shot should come along to NBA 3-point range.

So what's not to like? Well, it would be a surprise if Ennis was an effective defender, and it would likewise be a surprise if he became an All-Star. In a draft like this, "good" in the face of "potentially very good" slides down the board. It's tough to criticize a safe pick like this at this late a juncture.

Ennis joins a crowded backcourt in Phoenix, already occupied by Eric Bledsoe and Goran Dragic. Bledsoe is poised to earn a new contract in the near future which would pay him an average salary of eight digits, which have led to many speculating he will be on the move.

Ennis will need to up his playmaking ability to play the point at the pro level, but he will have some time to develop with those two in front of him.
