Report: Celtics package for Kevin Love not the best offer, not enough

Earlier this week, an ESPN report surfaced that the package that the Boston Celtics were willing to send the Minnesota Timberwolves for star forward Kevin Love was thought to be the best the Wolves will receive.

On Wednesday, however, that was shot down by a report from the Boston Herald, which suggests the Wolves have not only received offers they like better but also anticipate receiving more offers leading up to the draft.

Sources close to the situation have told the Herald that Boston's offer of draft picks and players isn’t nearly the best the Timberwolves have received — or expect to receive — for their All-Star forward.

One source indicated Denver and Golden State have both made more intriguing offers, and there are other teams very much in the picture, as well. There have been conflicting reports on whether the Warriors would make Klay Thompson available, but the Wolves are said to be confident they can find a more than acceptable deal there.

The main sticking point with the Celtics offer, which was previously said to include both of their first round picks in the loaded 2014 draft, as well as future picks and one or two young players, is that it doesn't offer Minnesota any quality players who can step in and contribute immediately. That would seem to indicate the Wolves are reluctant to commit to a full-scale rebuild from the ground up around Ricky Rubio, Gorgui Dieng and a handful of rookies.

The Golden State Warriors could offer that, and the Denver Nuggets could, to a lesser degree, but the report also suggests that the Wolves may still opt to keep Love with the hope of convincing him to stay.

Now, as with any rumors, it's certainly worth considering what teams may be leaking what information and why. This could be the Wolves maneuvering to try and extract additional assets from Boston, or the earlier report that they were leaning toward Boston's offer could have been leaked to push along the Warriors or Nuggets in negotiations.

The Celtics have seemed like a decent landing spot due to the picks they can offer, though Love's willingness to stay there long-term, with a core of just himself, Rajon Rondo and flotsam, seemed tenuous. If the Wolves aren't interested in a package based largely around picks, that last part may not matter.
