Could Birdman be flying north?

Following the Miami Heat's loss in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Sunday, attention quickly turned to the future of the team's roster. According to Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports, Chris Andersen will get the ball rolling on the Heat offseason by declining his 2014-15 player option.

That move has been expected all along, as Andersen's 2014-15 salary is for the league's veteran minimum. At worst, Andersen would be able to get the same contract on the open market, and at best he may be able to secure guaranteed money beyond just one year.

The Heat are likely to renounce his rights to clear his cap hold off the books entering free agency, but it remains possible - perhaps even likely - that Andersen will re-sign with the Heat at some point this summer.

Andersen will be 36 when next season begins and is coming off a season in which he averaged 6.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting 64.4 percent from the floor, easily his best output since 2009-10.
