Report: Rockets plan to decline Chandler Parsons' 2014-15 option

The Houston Rockets refuse to let a single offseason go by without acquiring a superstar player, apparently.

The Rockets plan to decline forward Chandler Parsons' team option for $960,000 in 2014-15, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports. The move would make Parsons a restricted free agent this offseason. If they choose to not decline his option, Parsons would become an unrestricted offseason in 2015 instead.

The goal in mind may be to acquire another superstar, as noted by Wojnarowski. He cites a few potential names in the Heat's LeBron James and Chris Bosh, the Knicks' Carmelo Anthony, the Timberwolves' Kevin Love, or even long-time Maverick Dirk Nowitzki.

However, declining the option may actually squander Parsons' value. At a bargain price of under a million dollars next season, the Rockets hold a tremendously valuable piece by virtue of his price, which may entice many teams in a trade.

The upside to declining the option is that it gives the Rockets the right to match any offers floated his way. This gives the Rockets certainty in retaining Parsons, which seems counter-intuitive if the goal is to ultimately trade Parsons for a superstar. However, if Parsons is locked into a reasonable deal, the possibility of a sign-and-trade scenario is also possible.

Parsons averaged 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game this season with the Rockets. He is expected to command a long-term deal worth eight figures in free agency.

The Rockets have until June 30 to make a decision on Parsons.
