Spurs paste Thunder in Game 2 blowout, take 2-0 series lead

Soobum Im / USA TODAY Sports

For the second time in as many games, the Oklahoma City Thunder had no answer for the San Antonio Spurs, falling 112-77 in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals Wednesday night.

The Spurs have now outscored the Thunder by 52 points in the series and hold a commanding 2-0 lead as the teams move to Chesapeake Energy Arena in OKC. So far, it's been execution with a surgeon's precision overcoming pure talent, with San Antonio's artful ball movement toppling the would-be dominance of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, who combined for just 30 points on 13-of-40 shooting on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for the Thunder, Serge Ibaka ain't walking through that door for Game 3 on Sunday, unless he and the team have been throwing out an elaborate smoke screen. Oklahoma City likely has to try and figure things out with the crew they've got.

Star Performer

We're giving the nod to "Spurs basketball" in this one. A 15-rebound edge, 27 assists on 41 field goals, an impressive 21-of-23 mark from the charity stripe, and five players scoring in double-figures.

While their minutes were held beneath thirty, "The Trio" did their damage, as Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili combined for 47 points on 17-of-33 shooting in just 78 minutes, adding 17 rebounds and 10 assists.

Turning Point

With 8:36 to play in the second quarter, the Thunder led 34-31. Over the remainder of the quarter, the Spurs would go on a 27-10 tear to take a 14-point halftime lead. They would then explode out of the break for a 33-18 third quarter advantage. It's not quite clear what changed - it was probably just the levy breaking against the pressure of San Antonio's execution - but from that early juncture on, it was just plain ugly.

Highlight Reel

This was pretty much a San Antonio Spurs mixtape game. Let's start with the passing:

This pretty much sums it up for the Thunder:

Quotes of the Game

This isn't a quote, but it's worth showing respect to: the trio of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili is now the winningest trio in NBA playoff history. A fifth title, which seems a legitimate possibility at this point, would somehow cement this rock-solid legacy even further.
