Report: Pelicans trying to unload Asik

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Pelicans are actively trying to find a taker for center Omer Asik, sources told The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The news came amid multiple reports Monday that the Pelicans were deep in discussions to acquire Philadelphia 76ers big man Jahlil Okafor. Any such deal would not include Asik, according to Wojnarowski.

Purging themselves of Asik's albatross contract would undoubtedly be high on the Pelicans' list of priorities, but executing such a move is another story. New Orleans signed the slow-footed big man to a five-year, $58-million contract in July 2015, and has seen production drop ever since. RealGM's Keith Smith even referred to the contract as the "NBA's least tradeable."

Asik is averaging 2.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in just under 16 minutes per game this season. Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry has tried to keep he and Anthony Davis off the floor at the same time this season.
