Westbrook notches 17th triple-double of season vs. Nuggets

USA Today Sports

It's difficult to put into words just how important Russell Westbrook is to the Oklahoma City Thunder, as his ungodly numbers and string of triple-doubles have kept the team right in the thick of things in the Western Conference sans former MVP Kevin Durant.

For the 17th time this season - and 54th time in his career - the 28-year-old point guard put up a triple-double in a 121-106 win over the visiting Denver Nuggets on Saturday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

In 35 minutes of action, Westbrook scored a game-high 32 points on 10-of-20 shooting with seven makes from behind the arc. He also grabbed an absurd 17 rebounds, handed out 11 assists, and stole the ball on three occasions.

To put into perspective just how sensational his production has been, Westbrook's 17th triple-double is one fewer than he had over the entire 2015-16 campaign, and we're not even halfway through this season.

He also has as many triple-doubles as James Harden, LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green ... combined.

Oklahoma City is now 32-3 over the last two seasons when Westbrook finishes with a triple-double.

Westbrook has now tied Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson (1988-89) for the 10th-most triple-doubles in a single season. He still has a ways to go if he wants to catch record-holder Oscar Robertson's 41, though, a feat accomplished in the 1961-62 season.
