Westbrook now averaging triple-double on the season

Adam Hunger / USA TODAY Sports

Russell Westbrook's inhuman season continued Monday night in New York.

The Oklahoma City Thunder guard recorded a triple-double in his first 20 minutes of action against the Knicks, accumulating 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists early in the third quarter, en route to a 27-point, 18-rebound, 14-assist performance in an OKC victory.

More important than Westbrook's eighth triple-double of the season, however - which tied him with LeBron James for sixth all time (45) - was what his 12th rebound of the night signified, as the five-time All-Star is now averaging a triple-double through 19 games.

While Westbrook will be hard-pressed to maintain his current pace for another four-and-a-half months and become the first player since Oscar Robertson in 1961-62 to average a triple-double for the season, the 28-year-old is already on the precipice of history. According to Elias Sports, no player since Robertson 55 years ago has even averaged a triple-double entering December, which Westbrook is a game away from achieving.

The Thunder's final game of November is Wednesday against the Washington Wizards, and Westbrook needs only four rebounds in the contest to carry his triple-double average into December.

With his eighth triple-double of the season, Westbrook has once again matched the rest of the league's combined total, and now has more in his last 19 games than the Knicks as a franchise have in the last 25 years.
