Westbrook recalls game-clinching dunk: 'I saved the best for last'

The plan for the Oklahoma City Thunder down the stretch was to hold onto the ball and await the intentional foul from the Houston Rockets.

But Russell Westbrook had a promise to keep.

With the Rockets down three in the dying moments of Wednesday's game, Westbrook passed up on two incoming free throws and instead drove in for a posterizer on Clint Capela that sealed the game.

Westbrook explained to ESPN's Royce Young afterwards that he wanted to fulfill his promise to teammate Victor Oladipo.

"I told Vic before the game that I'd get a left-handed dunk today, didn't know when," Westbrook said. "But I guess I saved the best for last, right?"

Oladipo confirmed that Westbrook did indeed call his shot.

"He told me that before the game. Yes, he did. I don't know where it came from, but the fact he did it the very last play is incredible. His memory is outstanding."

His play, however, wasn't without risk. Had Westbrook missed, or gotten blocked, the Rockets could have regained possession to potentially force overtime.

But Westbrook isn't really one for risk management.

"Yeah, I thought about it," Westbrook said of playing it more cautious. "That's why, you've got to make it. That's the risk you take. At least that's the risk I take."
