Devin Harris out 3 weeks with toe injury

The Dallas Mavericks will be light at point guard to start the season.

Veteran guard Devin Harris was diagnosed with a "significant sprain" of his right big toe and will miss three weeks, according to Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle.

"It's a significant sprain," Carlisle told Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News. "He will likely be in a boot for three weeks and be evaluated after that. We're going to be without him for a while. So we'll need the other guys to step up. But we feel like he's got a chance to come out of this OK."

Harris is fortunate on two accounts. One, he won't need surgery. Two, he avoided injuring his twice surgically repaired left big toe.

In his absence, the Mavericks will split point guard duties between Deron Williams and J.J. Barea.
