Bulls' Taj Gibson: Will compete for starting job at power forward

Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said Tuesday that Gibson would compete with Nikola Mirotic and Bobby Portis for the starting job at power forward, ESPN.com's Nick Friedell reports.

Analysis:

Hoiberg already appears to have settled on Robin Lopez as his new starting center, but the Bulls will still need to fill another spot in the frontcourt following the offseason departure of Pau Gasol. While Gibson has seniority working in his favor, his lack of floor-stretching ability might make him a poor fit alongside Lopez, a traditional back-to-basket big man. If Hoiberg does ultimately give Gibson the starting nod, it's unlikely to translate into a 30-plus minute role, as Mirotic and Portis will both remain in the mix for regular time in the rotation. Mirotic and Portis project as higher-upside options for their scoring abilities, though Gibson's skills as a rebounder won't make him entirely devoid of fantasy value.
