Wizards' Otto Porter: Will have to compete for starting job

Wizards coach Scott Brooks said Wednesday that Porter will have to battle Kelly Oubre for the starting job at small forward, Candace Buckner of The Washington Post reports. "Definitely it's going to be healthy competition [at small forward]," Brooks said. "We also have some younger players who are coming into camp. I'd like [Porter and Oubre] to take a step in the right direction and they should."

Analysis:

While the organization remains high on Oubre, a second-year swingman who claimed First-Team All-NBA Summer League honors in July, Porter still looks like the heavy favorite to come away with the starting job. He held down a full-time role all season in 2015-16, averaging 11.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals in 30.3 minutes per game while shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 36.7 percent from three-point range. It's expected that Oubre's role will be expanded during the upcoming season, but Porter shouldn't sacrifice too much playing time as a result.
