Timberwolves' Wiggins working to form formidable 1-2 punch with Towns

The Minnesota Timberwolves are a team on the rise, loaded with fledgling studs - highlighted by Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins - with all the potential in the world.

With a year under their belts together, the two former first overall picks are gearing up to lead the team to improve upon its 29-53 record last season.

Wiggins believes he and Towns are a match made in hoop heaven.

"We fit perfectly together," he told SI's Omari Sankofa. "We know each other's games and every game last year the potential was building into the future.

"I'm working on a few things that'll help with each other shooting from a double team, moves to get away from the next defender, reading the defense, and reading how we both play off of it."

The 6-8 small forward has been training across the West coast this offseason, honing both his ball-handling skills and long-range repertoire.

"I was working out, and mainly this summer I've been working on my handles and my shot, and just working on different things outside the 3-point line," he said.

While supporting his squad at Las Vegas Summer League, the 21-year-old Canadian was impressed by what he saw from Kris Dunn - whom the team selected fifth overall in June's draft - and Adreian Payne, saying the duo "shocked a lot of people."

With talented young players like that, internal growth, and improved defense under new head coach and team president Tom Thibodeau, Wiggins expects Minnesota to take a large leap. In fact, he sees the T-Wolves making the playoffs for the first time in a dozen years.

"I think we're going to have a way better season than we had this year. We just had a lot going on," he explained. "We've got some new pieces. I think last year we could've beat any team on any given day. This year we need to be more consistent with it. We can make the playoffs. Nothing is easy, we gotta work, and our coach is going to make us work."

Towns is also confident the team's fortunes are about to change, having said, "I just want people to know that we're coming. Just remember us, because where we were the last 13 years, things are about to change."

Wiggins agrees, and is itching to get the ball rolling.

"I'm excited for it. I think (Towns and I are) both ready for the season to get started," he said.
