Knicks, Lakers land in top 10 of Forbes' most valuable sports teams

Gregory J. Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

It's not the result of any recent success on the floor, but the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers have landed in the upper echelon of Forbes' annual list of the world's 50 most valuable professional sports franchises.

The Knicks came in at No. 7, with an estimated value of $3 billion. The Lakers were 10th, with a value pegged at $2.7 billion. Given the market size of both cities and their reputations as global media capitals, the rankings are hardly surprising.

It's worth noting, however, that the Lakers were ranked sixth in last year's Forbes ranking, with a value of $2.6 billion. The Knicks were eighth at $2.5 billion. It would seem the worst on-floor stretch in Lakers history has slowed down their annual growth.

The Dallas Cowboys topped the list, with Real Madrid and Barcelona rounding out the top three.
