Arum: Mayweather-McGregor talk is 'absolute nonsense'

Promoter Bob Arum is skeptical that an oft-discussed bout between boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor has any legs.

On Dec. 13, UFC president Dana White publicly offered Mayweather $25 million to accept a bout with "The Notorious," but even with that figure floating around, Arum isn't convinced the parties involved will be able to make the fight happen.

"It's just talk and it's absolute nonsense for these guys to fight each other," Arum told TMZ Sports.

"Floyd is calling McGregor out and the point is McGregor has a contract with the UFC, so no fight even if McGregor wanted can be done without the UFC," Arum continued. "So this is Dana White's way of establishing that point."

Talk of the crossover bout is even more confusing to Arum given he doesn't see either man having much success in the other's realm. He predicts McGregor would be crushed in a boxing ring, while the same would happen to Mayweather should he try his hand at cage fighting.

White's offer also doesn't add up for Arum. Mayweather was paid a reported $32-million purse for a low-wattage meeting with Andre Berto on Sept. 12, 2015, and would be unlikely to take a pay cut under any circumstances.

"Floyd can fight a lot of fights with a lot of fighters for more than $25 million," Arum said. "When he had the contract with Showtime, he made over $30 million a fight."
