UFC's Thompson: Josh Donaldson will put the belt on me when I win

If Stephen Thompson becomes the UFC champion, he may be joined in the Octagon by another athlete who is no stranger to hardware.

During a recent trip to Toronto, "Wonderboy" spent time training with Blue Jays third baseman and 2015 American League MVP Josh Donaldson, and the two have apparently stayed in touch. Thompson appeared on "The MMA Hour" on Monday and he revealed that the plan is for Donaldson to put the welterweight title around his waist should he manage to win a yet-to-be booked rematch with Tyron Woodley at UFC 209 in Las Vegas.

"(Josh) already called it," said Thompson. "We've already talked to Dana White, he's already made plans to be down there March 4 and he's going to be the one putting that belt around my waist."

Thompson fought Woodley to a majority draw at UFC 205 last November, which meant that the champ retained and Thompson was left empty-handed. In December, the UFC sent Thompson a bout agreement for a rematch that he has already signed, but Woodley is giving no indication that he plans to follow suit.

As for Donaldson, Thompson sees a lot of potential in the 31-year-old slugger, especially considering some of the footage that Donaldson has sent him.

"(Josh) is a tremendous athlete," said Thompson. "Some of the things that we were doing, I would show advanced guys. Hook kicks. Spin hook kicks. And he was throwing. He sent me a video the other day (of him) throwing some spin kicks to his buddy. I'm like, 'What? Why aren't you fighting, man?'"

Any pitchers considering throwing at Donaldson next season may want to think twice about it.
