EA Sports revealed earlier in the year that the latest instalment of its wildly popular "FIFA" video game franchise, "FIFA 16," will give gamers the opportunity to play as their favourite female stars for the first time ever.

Following the unprecedented success of the 2015 Women's World Cup, the gaming giant has decided that addition didn't quite do the world's best female footballers justice.

EA Sports revealed Monday that American striker Alex Morgan will be featured on the U.S. regional cover of FIFA 16, alongside long-standing cover star Lionel Messi.

"It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of EA SPORTS 'FIFA,'" the 26-year-old said in a press release. "I know people all over the world play this game and I'm really excited that 'FIFA 16' is putting such an important spotlight on women's soccer. And now to share the cover with today's greatest player is surreal."

While Morgan will adorn the cover in the United States, Christine Sinclair - the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Canadian women's national team - will grace the cover in her home country.

Morgan and Sinclair, along with Stephanie Catley - who will be pictured on the cover in Australia - become the first women ever to be featured on the cover of the world's most popular soccer video game.

The game is due for release in September.
