USL side terminates contract of player responsible for attack on unwitting opponent

Los Angeles - USL club the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Sunday terminated the contract of Romeo Parks after the Jamaican violently kicked an unsuspecting opponent in a match against New York Red Bulls II.

In the game in the third tier United Soccer League on Saturday, Parkes unleashed a vicious kick to the lower back of Karl Ouimette - who was walking away after both had been sent off.

Canada's Ouimette, who was on a short-term loan to Red Bulls II, crumpled to the pitch and was stretchered off.

The incident has marred what had been a strong recent run for Parkes. He had scored in five straight matches and was named to Jamaica's preliminary 40-man roster for the Copa America Centenario, raising the prospect he could add to his four international appearances.

Tuffy Shallenberger, owner of the Riverhounds, said Parkes had been sacked for "conduct detrimental to the team and the United Soccer League".

Shallenberger further offered an apology to fans and to Red Bulls II - a reserves team of Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls.

Parkes used Twitter to apologize after the game, calling his action "wrong and inappropriate."
