Christian Bolanos scores again, Whitecaps beat Timbers 2-1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) Christian Bolanos scored his third goal in three games and the Vancouver Whitecaps rallied to beat the Portland Timbers 2-1 on Saturday.

Bolanos broke a tie in the 66th minute on a chip into the penalty area that goalkeeper Jake Gleeson allowed to trickle between his legs after Whitecaps striker Blas Perez flashed in front.

''Blas made a problem for the goalkeeper,'' Bolanos said. ''He's thinking maybe Blas will touch the ball. It was lucky, but it's good.''

Masato Kudo tied it for Vancouver in the 60th minute with his first MLS goal. Kudo took a deflected pass from Cristian Techera and beat Gleeson at the near post on a low shot.

''We showed today what we can be,'' Vancouver coach Carl Robinson said. ''Every man from one to 11 was very strong, but that's the standard I require.''

The Whitecaps (4-5-2) won for the second time in their last seven games.

Nate Borchers scored for Portland (3-4-3) in the 34th minute.

The Timbers had a great chance to tie in the 86th on a 3-on-1 break, but goalkeeper David Ousted stopped Diego Valeri's partially deflected shot.

''I thought we deserved something out of the game, at least a draw,'' Portland coach Caleb Porter said. But, credit to Vancouver for that second half and clawing back in to score two goals. The reason I felt we deserved something out of it is because we were up 1-0 at the start of the second half, in a great position and getting looks on counter attacks. We do a bit better on a couple of those chances that we had, which were very good opportunities, and the game is different.''

Portland striker Darren Mattocks, who was drafted second overall by the Whitecaps in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft and spent four years in Vancouver before getting traded to the Timbers before this season, started for the visitors and was booed every time he touched the ball.
