VIDEO: Bumgarner confronts Heyward after strikeout

MLB.com

The San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs are both World Series contenders this season, leaving Thursday's spring training tilt feeling more like a game in October as opposed to March.

With two runners on in the fourth inning and Jason Heyward at the plate for the Cubs, Giants starter Madison Bumgarner caught the outfielder looking on a called third strike. As Heyward made his way to the dugout, he appeared to say something to Bumgarner, causing the former Cy Young winner to approach Heyward in search of an explanation.

Bumgarner told reporters following the outing that Heyward said he wasn't yelling at him, but rather he was trying to communicate with Dexter Fowler on second. Bumgarner believes Heyward was gesturing to Fowler for doing a poor job at signalling to him the location of the upcoming pitches.

"You might want to be more discreet if you're going to do that kind of thing," Bumgarner said.

Heyward said he was checking with Fowler on whether he believed the pitch was a strike, and wasn't stealing signs.
