Dodgers sign Blanton to 1-year deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers bolstered their pitching depth Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran right-hander Joe Blanton, the team announced.

The deal is reportedly worth $4 million, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

A starter for almost the entirety of the first 10 years of his career, the 35-year-old found success as a reliever last season after returning to the majors last season following his retirement in 2014.

Blanton agreed to a minor-league deal with the Kansas City Royals last February, but was designated for assignment in July despite pitching well in order to make room for Johnny Cueto. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates the following day, and would go on to post a 1.57 ERA and 39 strikeouts over 34 1/3 innings in Pittsburgh.

The Dodgers have spent a busy offseason adding to their pitching staff, though many of the moves they've made have been tailored towards the rotation. Blanton joins a relief corps that ranked 19th last season with a 3.91 ERA.
