Report: Zobrist is Mets' top free-agent target

Ben Zobrist is quickly becoming one of the most highly sought-after free agents this fall, but one team in particular is zeroing in on him.

Zobrist is the New York Mets' No. 1 target in free agency, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The 34-year-old's versatility on the diamond is one of his key selling points, and the Washington Nationals, Atlanta Braves, and San Francisco Giants are some of the other clubs in hot pursuit of Zobrist. The Kansas City Royals, who acquired Zobrist for the stretch run last year, are also in the mix, but aren't expected to offer as much cash as other interested clubs.

The two-time All-Star played an instrumental role in the Royals' championship run last season, hitting a blistering .303/.365/.515 with two homers and six RBIs during the postseason. Zobrist's many talents have almost every general manager salivating at the prospect of signing him.

"Ben Zobrist brings so much to the table on and off the field that he could help all 30 teams," Braves GM John Coppolella told Rosenthal.

New York is desperate to add some offensive punch to its lineup after losing Yoenis Cespedes and Daniel Murphy to free agency.
