Gibbons thinks Stroman will start if rehab assignment goes well

Marcus Stroman threw another simulated game on Friday and things look to be on track for him to move forward in his recovery process.

The Toronto Blue Jays starter will now make his first minor-league rehab start on Wednesday for Class-A Lansing, before moving up to Triple-A Buffalo to pitch on Sept. 7.

Manager John Gibbons spoke with reporters about the young hurler and his potential return.

"If he proves he's ready, he's a priority around here," Gibbons said. "The way it's going now he might come up and start for us.

"It might give everybody else a breather. If he comes back and he's really good, he could turn some things upside down."

Toronto is considering the idea of making Stroman a sixth starter in the team's rotation behind David Price, R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle, Marco Estrada, and Drew Hutchison.

Stroman has missed the entire season with a torn ACL in his left knee after making an impressive debut with the Blue Jays last year.

He pitched to an 11-6 record with an ERA of 3.65 and WHIP of 1.17.
