Dodgers' Ryu to undergo shoulder surgery on Thursday
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu will undergo potentially season-ending shoulder surgery.
The club confirmed that Ryu will have arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder in Los Angeles on Thursday. The left-hander's latest MRI didn't reveal any structural damage, however, so the procedure will be to clean up the source of inflammation.
Manager Don Mattingly told reporters earlier this month that the team decided to slow down Ryu's rehab after he showed diminished velocity during a workout. Ryu, who missed three weeks last year with shoulder inflammation, opened the season on the disabled list and has yet to graduate beyond bullpen sessions.
Ryu is the second Dodgers starter to go under the knife this season.
Brandon McCarthy, who signed a four-year, $48-million contract with the Dodgers this past winter, is likely out until next summer after undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair a UCL tear in his throwing elbow.
