Report: Giants agree to minor-league deal with Ricky Romero

Ricky Romero will reportedly get a chance to revive his career in his native California.

Released by the Toronto Blue Jays last month after control issues and injuries derailed his career, the 30-year-old agreed to a minor-league deal with the San Francisco Giants, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Romero, who is still owed almost $7.5 million by the Blue Jays, hasn't thrown a pitch in a major-league game since 2013, though, and is still recovering from a pair of surgeries precipitated by chronic knee problems.

Selected with the sixth pick of the 2005 draft, Romero quickly emerged as a rotation stalwart for the Blue Jays following his 2009 debut - he earned an All-Star appearance at the age of 26 - before major control issues halted a career that began with such promise.

After crafting a 2.92 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP over 225 innings in 2011, Romero's ability to throw strikes completely disintegrated the following season. The erratic hurler led the American League with 105 walks in 2012, stumbling to an atrocious 5.77 ERA with a 1.67 WHIP over 32 starts that cast a pall over his future with the organization.

Romero was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Buffalo the following spring, but his control woes didn't relent. Over 22 starts in the International League, Romero managed a 5.78 ERA with a 12 percent walk rate, and the struggling left-hander didn't impress when he was recalled to the Blue Jays for a brief period in May (and later for two appearances in September after rosters expanded).

Romero opened the 2014 campaign in Buffalo, too, but issued a whopping 42 walks over 37 2/3 innings before undergoing season-ending surgery June 17 to alleviate tendon inflammation in his left quadriceps.

Released on April 25 with one year remaining on his contract (and a $600,000 buyout for his 2016 option), Romero has not pitched in a professional game since June 1, 2014.
