Astros, Keuchel stay hot by sweeping Padres for 6th straight win

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Keuchel continues to dominate opposing batters, one ground ball at a time.

The Houston Astros left-hander remained perfect Wednesday, limiting San Diego's vaunted offense to one run on three hits over eight innings to secure the three-game sweep of the Padres with a 7-2 win at Petco Park.

It was the Astros' sixth win in a row, 10th in 11 games and capped the best road trip (8-1) in franchise history.

Keuchel (3-0) held the Padres in check by inducing 11 grounders, plenty of weak contact and one run or fewer for the fifth straight start. Keuchel, whose 65.3 percent ground-ball rate is the highest in the majors, lowered his ERA to 0.73 and has allowed just three earned runs in 37 innings this season.

Outfielder Colby Rasmus helped lead the attack with his second homer in three games. The Astros, who have lost at least 92 games in four straight seasons, improved to 14-7 and lead the American League West by 4 1/2 games.

"The boys are hot right now," Rasmus told reporters after the game.

Wednesday's contest featured several records and notable milestones, including:

  • Keuchel's 0.73 ERA is the lowest in franchise history through five starts
  • Astros won their record-setting 10th consecutive Keuchel start
  • Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner set an MLB record with his 21st straight home start allowing two or fewer runs

The Astros now return home for six games beginning with three against theSeattle Mariners on Friday.
