The Miami Marlins have named former general manager Dan Jennings as their next manager after the team dismissed Mike Redmond on Sunday following a 6-0 loss to the Braves.

"I've always considered myself, now 31 years in the game, as a baseball man," Jennings said in a press conference. "... I have tremendous respect for the position of a major league manager."

Many were skeptical, including Jennings' mother, on whether or not taking the position was the right move.

"Even my mom, who I love, she asked me, 'Are you crazy? Have you lost your mind?'," he said.

Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill said that this isn't a position filled on an interim basis. Instead, Jennings is the go-to guy for the 2015 season, after which the club will "reevaluate" the situation.

"We wanted someone who knew our players," he added. "We didn't want an outsider."

The club has also named Marlins advance scout Mike Goff as the bench coach, replacing Rob Leary, who was also dismissed following the loss on Sunday. Jennings said that was a turning point for him in making a decision.

"The only way I would consider (the job) was if Mike Goff was removed from his scouting position to bench coach," he said.

Jennings' career with the Marlins started back in the 2002 season when he was brought in to serve as the vice-president of personnel. He was named the assistant GM in September of 2007 and was named the general manager at the end of the 2013 season, replacing Larry Beinfest.

His front office experience is evident, but his coaching experience is lacking, making the decision a surprise. His last coaching job was for Davidson High School in the early 1980s.

Former players Brett Butler, Jeff Conine and Ivan Rodriguez were rumored to be candidates for the position.
