Wandy Rodriguez to start Friday for Rangers

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

In an effort to give some of their starters a little more rest, the Texas Rangers will promote veteran left-hander Wandy Rodriguez from Triple-A Round Rock to start Friday against the Los Angeles Angels.

"This gives (Ross Detwiler) a chance to exhale and gives a guy (Colby Lewis) who I pushed hard the last time to get some extra rest," Rangers manager Jeff Banister told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. "And it allows us to keep the guy who has pitched very well for us (Nick Martinez) on normal rest."

Rodriguez signed a minor-league deal with Texas earlier this month after being released by the Atlanta Braves during the latter stages of spring training. The 36-year-old has logged just 18 major-league starts over the last two seasons amid ceaseless injury problems, but has allowed just two earned runs over seven innings for Round Rock in 2015.

In order to promote Rodriguez, though, the Rangers will have to clear a spot on their 40-man roster by either placing a player on the 60-day disabled list or designating someone for assignment.
