Randy Johnson to wear Diamondbacks cap on Hall of Fame plaque

Randy Johnson, who was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this month in his first year on the ballot, will be immortalized at Cooperstown with an Arizona Diamondbacks hat on his head.

Debate ensued as to which team Johnson would be aligned with in Cooperstown - the Diamondbacks or the Seattle Mariners - after the towering left-hander appeared on 97.3 percent of 549 ballots submitted by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. The museum, however, announced Friday that Johnson's plaque in Cooperstown will depict the five-time Cy Young award winner sporting a Diamondbacks cap.

"After reflecting the last week and conferring with the Hall of Fame, we've come to the decision that the Diamondbacks logo on my Hall of Fame plaque makes the most sense," Johnson said in a statement. "I want to express my most sincere thanks to all the teams I played for - Montreal, Seattle, Houston, the New York Yankees and San Francisco - and particularly all of the fans for supporting me. I'm very humbled by this honor."

Johnson signed a four-year deal with the Diamondbacks following the 1998 campaign - the expansion club's inaugural season - and proved instrumental in turning the fledgling franchise into a juggernaut. Johnson claimed the NL Cy Young award in each of his first four seasons in Arizona, and was an integral part of the team's 2001 World Series victory over the New York Yankees.

The 6-foot-10 southpaw left Arizona after the 2004 season, but returned to the Diamondbacks for a two-year stint at the age of 43. Over eight seasons in Arizona, Johnson fashioned a 2.83 ERA (164 ERA+) with a 4.99 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 232 starts and one relief appearance.
