Report: Mets, Rockies discussing Tulowitzki blockbuster trade

Chris Humphreys / USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rockies and New York Mets are reportedly making progress on a potential blockbuster trade involving superstar shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is reporting the two clubs have been discussing the framework for such a deal for weeks now, but cautions the parties are still in the early stages of negotiations.

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard - considered the club's No. 1-rated prospect - is rumored to be the centerpiece of a potential deal for the four-time All-Star Tulowitzki. The hard-throwing right-hander was a consensus top 15 prospect in all of baseball prior to last season.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports confirms the teams have engaged in talks, but says several obstacles remain in completing such a deal. Rosenthal handicaps the chances of a trade at between 5-10 percent.

Among the most notable challenges: Tulowitzki's health and contract. The oft-injured star has played more than 140 games just once since 2010 and is owed $118 million over the next six years. There's also an assumed reluctance on the part of Rockies ownership to move the face of the franchise and one of the game's best players when healthy.

Tulowitzki, 30, produced an MVP-type first half, crushing 21 homers and posting a 1.048 OPS prior to the All-Star break. His season ended in late July, however, after suffering a labrum tear that required hip surgery. Despite playing just 91 games last year, Tulowitzki finished second among MLB shortstops with 5.1 WAR.

He's expected to be ready by Opening Day.
