Weekend Sports In Brief

GOLF

GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) The tone was set by Rory McIlroy, the best player in the world. The winning shot came from Jamie Donaldson, a Ryder Cup rookie.

Europe added another layer to its Ryder Cup dominance on Sunday by leaving no doubt who had the best team, if not the best players. Behind two early comebacks that showed its resolve, Europe clinched the cup with four matches still on the course.

With a 16 1/2 to 11 1/2 victory, Europe kept that gold trophy for the eighth time in the last 10 tries.

Donaldson finished off the Americans with a 9-iron that settled 18 inches from the cup on the 15th hole at Gleneagles and set off the celebration.

Not long after the closing ceremony, Phil Mickelson said the Americans have strayed from the winning formula at Valhalla in 2008 under Paul Azinger - their only victory in these matches dating to 1999. Even with U.S. captain Tom Watson sitting six seats away, Mickelson said that American team was invested in each other, which was different from Watson's style of doing it his way.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) - John Cook won the First Tee Open at Pebble Beach for his 10th Champions Tour title, closing with a 3-under 69 for a one-stroke victory over Tom Byrum.

The 56-year-old Cook birdied the par-4 13th and parred the final five holes to finish at 11-under 204 total. He won the 1981 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach for the first of his 11 PGA Tour titles and also won the 1975 California State Amateur at the course.

Cook parred the par-5 18th, missing a 25-foot birdie try that left a tap-in for the victory.

Byrum also shot 69. Winless on the 50-and-over tour after winning once on the PGA Tour, he bogeyed the par-5 14th and par-3 17th and closed with a par.

Cook won for the first time since the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii in January 2013. He began the final round with a one-shot lead over Byrum and Skip Kendall.

BASEBALL

BOSTON (AP) - On the last day of his remarkable career, Derek Jeter performed one final amazing feat. He brought Yankees and Red Sox fans together.

The rich and often antagonistic rivalry showed its softer side Sunday: A pregame ceremony honoring New York's retiring captain produced numerous standing ovations from a crowd filled with shirts from both teams. Jeter tipped his helmet to fans when he left the game for a pinch runner in the third inning of the Yankees' 9-5 win.

At the start of the ceremony, the date ''SEPTEMBER 28 2014'' was removed, one character at a time, from the hand-operated scoreboard on the left-field wall and replaced by ''WITH RESPECT 2 DEREK JETER.'' Then the ''S'' in ''RESPECT'' was replaced by the No. 2.

Jeter, the designated hitter, waved his cap to a crowd as he left the dugout for his 153rd game at Fenway, including the playoffs, breaking a tie with Lou Gehrig and Mantle for most among Yankees.

WASHINGTON (AP) - One out away from pitching the Washington Nationals' first no-hitter, Jordan Zimmermann watched his 104th pitch on a crisp, clear afternoon get smacked toward deep left-center.

Zimmermann leaned his head back and winced. His first thought: ''Double. No-doubt double.''

''And then,'' the right-hander said later, ''he comes out of nowhere and makes that catch.''

Thanks to a dramatic, diving grab by little-used rookie Steven Souza Jr., who came on as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning, Zimmermann completed his gem, a 1-0 victory for the NL East champion Nationals over the Miami Marlins.

DETROIT (AP) - David Price pitched Detroit to its fourth straight AL Central title with the type of performance the Tigers acquired him for, taking a shutout into the eighth inning of a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday that wrapped up the division on the regular season's final day.

Ian Kinsler hit a solo homer in the third, and the Tigers added two more runs in the eighth.

Detroit entered the game with a postseason berth already wrapped up, but the Tigers led the division by only one game over Kansas City. The victory gave Detroit the division championship - regardless of what the Royals were doing in Chicago against the White Sox.

AUTO RACING

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Jeff Gordon won the third race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship for an automatic spot in the 12-driver field that advanced to the next round.

Gordon was in control in the closing laps Sunday at Dover International Speedway and joined Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano as the three drivers who were guaranteed a berth in the next Chase round with victories.

Kurt Busch, AJ Allmendinger, Greg Biffle and Aric Almirola were eliminated from championship contention. Four more drivers will be eliminated in the next three-race segment that starts next week at Kansas Speedway.

Kasey Kahne was the last driver to make the Chase cut. Kevin Harvick also advanced, along with Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman.

Hamlin was the lone driver of the bottom four entering Dover to race his way into the top 12. The points will reset for the Kansas, Charlotte and Talladega.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Florida State stays at No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll after a second straight comeback victory, but support for the Seminoles is waning.

Florida State received 27 first-place votes, seven fewer than last week, from the media panel Sunday. No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Alabama both had 13 first-place votes. No. 4 Oklahoma drew the remaining seven first-place votes.

There was little movement throughout the rankings, with the first seven teams holding their spots. That could change next week when six games match ranked teams, including three SEC games.
