American League Game Summary - Oakland at Texas

Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Robinson Chirinos hit a two-run home run to lead the Texas Rangers in a 5-4 win over the Oakland Athletics in the second of a season-ending three-game series.

Oakland has yet to clinch the final playoff spot in the American League, as the loss has them one game ahead of Seattle going to the final day of the regular season. The Mariners beat the Angels in 11 innings Saturday night. If the teams end in a tie, there will be a one-game playoff at Safeco Field Monday to determine the second wild card team.

Jake Smolinski hit a solo home run and score twice while Adrian Beltre and Rougned Odor each drove in a run for the Rangers, who came into the game having won 12 of their previous 14 games.

Scott Baker pitched four-plus innings and allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Spencer Patton (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his first career win.

"I think all of these guys have risen to the occasion when everything is on the line," Rangers interim manager Tim Bogar said.

Josh Donaldson was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored while Josh Reddick also had three hits with an RBI and a run scored for the Athletics, who have lost four of their last five games.

"These things are tough when you have to talk about a game like that every night, five minutes after the game," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "It takes a while to digest these things, then you move onto whatever the next scenario is."

Jeff Samardzija (5-6) allowed five runs on eight hits over seven innings to take the loss.

Donaldson's two-out solo homer in the first got the A's on the board, but the Rangers answered in the home with RBI singles from Odor and Beltre for a 2-1 lead.

Smolinski gave Texas a 3-1 lead in the fourth with his third home run of the season, but a run-scoring double play from Nate Freiman in the fifth got the Rangers back within one.

In the seventh, Smolinski led off with a single and was still there three batters later when Chirinos launched a pitch over the wall in center for his 13th home run and a 5-2 advantage.

Oakland made it a one-run game in the eighth on RBI singles from Reddick and Jed Lowrie. Alberto Callaspo, though, flied out to end the inning, stranding runners on first and third.

Nick Punto singled with one out in the ninth off Neftali Feliz and was replaced by Billy Burns, who got himself caught stealing second. Coco Crisp then worked a walk, but Feliz struck out Jonny Gomes for his 13th save of the season.
