Before Derek Jeter's unforgettable finale in the Bronx on Thursday night, New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi lambasted his team's efforts this season while expressing his disappointment over failing to make the playoffs for a second successive campaign, according to an ESPN report.

According to clubhouse sources who were present for the critique, and backed up by interviews with more than a half-dozen players, most of whom spoke to ESPNNewYork.com off the record for fear of angering their manager, Girardi chided some players for being overweight and others for not being "hungry" enough.

Girardi, however, referred to the incident as a "team meeting" and refused to divulge details about what was discussed, though he described his tone as "disappointed" rather than "angry."

"I'll tell you what really bothers me, and I'm not blaming you," he said to the reporter who confronted him about the meeting. "It's that you know. It's not right that the meetings you have in the clubhouse get out of the clubhouse."

Several players refused to comment on the meeting's specifics, but catcher Brian McCann said he had no problems with his club's effort this season.

"For whatever reason we came up short, but it wasn't for a lack of effort," McCann said.
