Highlights from Derek Jeter's final season

Derek Jeter isn't performing at the level he did when he first entered the league, but the New York Yankees' legend has remained the center of attention during his 20th and final season in the majors.

Jeter, missing the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time in his career, has less than a handful of games remaining to deliver one last signature moment.

The Captain began his 2014 season with a 1-for-3 effort in a loss to the Houston Astros, who kicked off Jeter's retirement tour six months ago with a Texas-sized tribute.

Jeter, who didn't launch his first home run of the season until May 7, hit a respectable .272 with a .324 on-base percentage in the first half before coming through with perhaps his top highlight of the year at the All-Star Game.

The 14-time All-Star also recorded a pair of hits before leaving to a standing ovation in Minneapolis in the American League's 5-3 win.

New York's all-time hits leader continued his assault on the record books later in July in a win over the Texas Rangers, recording his 535th career double to pass Lou Gehrig for the most in franchise history.

The five-time World Series champion beefed up his resume in August with one swing of the bat when he passed Honus Wagner for sole possession of sixth place on Major League Baseball's all-time hits list and catapulted to the top spot among shortstops in the process.

New York honored the 40-year-old at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 7 on what was dubbed "Derek Jeter Day." NBA legend Michael Jordan, former teammates, and even astronauts from the International Space Station were among those who paid their respects to Jeter.

The highlight of Derek Jeter Day came off the field during a postgame press conference:

Jeter was honored some more in September with epic video tributes by Gatorade and MLB.

The Michigan native's final month also witnessed him move into ninth place on the all-time runs list.

New York fans waited since April for Jeter's first home run of 2014 at Yankee Stadium and he delivered in the club's final homestand of the year.

Commemorative No. 2 bases inscribed with some of Jeter's career achievements were used during his last games in the Bronx.

After saying goodbye to the New York faithful Thursday, a final visit to Fenway Park is all that remains in Jeter's memorable career.
