VIDEO: Dodgers successfully utilize 4-man shift to get runner out at home
It must be somewhat embarrassing for a hitter when a team uses a shift in anticipation of where the ball will be hit. So it must have been even more so when the Los Angeles Dodgers brought an outfielder into the mix when San Diego Padres outfielder Seth Smith came to the plate.
The Dodgers implemented the rare five-man infield against Smith, with outfielder Andre Ethier joining three infielders on the right side of the diamond while Justin Turner covered third base.
With the bases loaded, Smith predictably hit to the shift. Though, the alignment was actually designed to force the runner out at home when the ball was struck. Smith avoided the double play by outrunning the catcher's throw to first base, where he was ruled safe.
