Though many expect the Toronto Blue Jays to be active as Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline nears, the team is reportedly "telling clubs they can't take on any significant money in any deal," according to ESPN's Jayson Stark.

Stark's report contradicts comments made earlier this month by Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos, who suggested the club could accommodate a payroll increase if it makes sense for the team.

"I think we have enough resources to do what we want to do," Anthopoulos recently told MLB.com's Gregor Chisolm. "There are ways we can be creative. I don't have any doubt about our ability to add players. ... Ownership has been outstanding. If the baseball trade lines up for us, I don't see any reason why we can't add players at the Trade Deadline."

The Blue Jays currently boast the eighth-highest payroll in the majors at roughly $137 million, though their spendthrift offseason - Dioner Navarro's two-year, $8-million deal was the club's biggest investment this winter - caused many to speculate that the team is not in a position to increase payroll.
