Elbow strain forces Orioles to shut down prospect Hunter Harvey

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

Hunter Harvey's first full season in professional baseball was cut short Wednesday, as the 19-year-old prospect was shut down by the Baltimore Orioles due to an elbow strain and will miss the remainder of the campaign, according to MASN's Roch Kubatko.

Selected in the first round of last year's draft, Harvey spent the entire 2014 campaign in the South Atlantic League, where the right-hander crafted a 3.18 ERA across 17 starts while averaging 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Harvey's elbow strain also constitutes a serious blow to one of Baltimore's most attractive trade assets, as the Orioles could look to bolster their roster in advance of Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline and were reportedly "in serious talks" Wednesday for Boston Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester.
