The New York Yankees have released veteran outfielder Alfonso Soriano, according to the league's transactions page.
Soriano was designated for assignment on July 6 and hit just .221 with six home runs through 67 games and 238 plate appearances.
The seven-time All-Star could catch on as a depth player for a playoff contender down the stretch. The 38-year-old has 44 postseason games to his credit but hasn't played fall baseball since 2008.
