Astros' Reddick reaches base twice on catcher interference

In one of baseball's more unusual occurrences, Houston Astros outfielder Josh Reddick was awarded first base twice Friday due to catcher interference from Oakland Athletics backstop Stephen Vogt.

Reddick, who otherwise went 2-for-3, was at a loss to explain how he became just the seventh player to draw two catcher interference calls in the same game.

"Very strange," Reddick told the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser. "I've done it every now and then but I've never heard of doing it twice in one game, much less twice in one week. I don't feel like I'm going back on the ball, I feel like my swing's right where I need it to be. Maybe (Vogt) is coming up a little too much or I'm letting it get too deep and surprised him, I don't know. But I'll take it."

Vogt credited Reddick's unorthodox swing, but also cited a need to adjust when it comes to players like his former teammate.

"You don't see it very often," Vogt said. "That's not really how you swing the bat typically, but he does a good job going the other way and that's on me. I have to make sure I'm back and not reaching for the ball."

Reddick only ended up scoring once in the game, though it followed the first interference call. The damage was done elsewhere as the Astros went on to win 9-4.
