Syndergaard boldly labels New York 'a Mets city'

Thor just mashed his hammer into the hearts of New York Yankees fans.

When asked how often he interacts with fans of the Bronx Bombers, New York Mets starter Noah Syndergaard offered up a to-the-point explanation as to why he thinks the city sides more with his club.

"I don't think I've really run into a Yankees fan," Syndergaard said on "The Dan Patrick Show," by way of Jake Becker of the New York Daily News. "They might mention to me that they're a Yankees fan and (say), 'I think you're a great pitcher,' stuff like that, but now New York ... it's a Mets city."

Syndergaard's proclamation seems to be backed by a recent poll Quinnipiac University released March 31 which showed that 45 percent of New York residents cheer for the Mets, with 43 percent of opposing fans siding with the Yankees.

"I just think we got a lot of exciting players, guys like (Yoenis) Cespedes, who’s incredible to watch, the starting-five core that we have in our rotation, full of a lot of youth," Syndergaard said.

"We’re backed by a lot of great team leadership, a lot of veterans on the team like Curtis Granderson. I couldn’t be more thankful to have that guy on our side. Guys like David (Wright) - even though he’s hurt right now. I hope he gets on the field as fast as possible and has a speedy recovery. But just having his presence in the clubhouse is unbelievable."

The slight dip in popularity might have to do with the Yankees' youth movement and recent focus on developing talent. Conversely, the Mets boast one of the majors' most potent starting rotations and are widely considered to be among the National League's most prolific teams.
